Keep reading below to learn everything there is to know about getting the most out of your closet!
1. Start by Decluttering
You can’t begin to see the potential your closet has until you declutter it. That’s your starting point. You can begin decluttering your closet by removing everything from inside it. Make a few different piles. You’ll most likely have items you want to keep, items you want to sell, and items you want to donate. After making these piles, only put the items you’re keeping back into your closet. Before you even do that, though, you’ll want to know your closet-organization plans. How will you store everything? Where will you put your shoes? Have a plan before simply throwing everything back inside it.
2. Use Vertical Hangers
Vertical hangers are a great option to look into. If you find hanging all of your clothes takes up too much space inside your closet, then these hangers could be the answer you’ve been looking for. Vertical hangers hang on the rack just like any other type of hanger. The difference is that they allow you to hang multiple items on one hanger. The items hang vertically, making it easy for you to spot what you need. You can even consider hanging all of the pieces to one outfit on the same hanger or a variety of similar items altogether.
3. Install a Bright Light Fixture
There’s nothing worst than heading into a dark and cluttered closet. Without proper lighting, it’s hard to find what you need. A dim light will also make your closet appear smaller than what it is. Instead, install bright light fixtures that’ll brighten up the closet. If possible, having a small window installed or find other ways to allow natural light to enter.
4. Hang Plenty of Mirrors
Hanging mirrors inside a small room works well to make space appear larger than it is. The mirrors create an optical illusion and will make your closet seem much more spacious. If you can hang one large mirror on one wall, then do so. If you have space for more, add more. If you’re using an organizer with doors or drawers on it, then consider using mirror doors and drawers to maximize the space.
5. Place an Organizer Inside It
Using an organizer inside the closet is a great way to ensure everything stays organized at all times. All organizers are different, and you can even have them custom made if desired. Think about what you need the most. Do you need more drawers inside your closet, more space to hang clothes, or more shelves to place your shoes on? Keep these things in mind when selecting the right organizer for you. Once you have a closet organizer, you can then create sections for all your specific items and know exactly where to go when looking for them and exactly where to go when putting them back.
6. Roll Items Rather Than Flat Folding
If you’re looking for more ways to save space within your closet, then consider rolling some of your items rather than folding them flat. When you roll certain items, you can place more of them in a drawer and you can see each and every item as well. Some items might not work well rolled up such as formal blouses or other material that wrinkles easily. T-shirts, blankets, towels, and other things can roll easily and won’t unroll with any wrinkles or dents.
7. Invest in Double Clothing Rods
If your closet’s ceiling is tall enough for it, then you can invest in double clothing rods. Install one clothing rod as the bottom level rod. Make sure there’s enough space for your clothes to hang on it without touching the floor. The bottom rod is good for hanging shirts or shorts on. Then, hang another rod above this one. The top rod should be high enough that the clothes from the top and bottom rod don’t overlap. It should also be at a height not too high that you can’t reach your clothes. If you’re able to fit both rods inside your closet properly, then it’s a great way to save some space.
8. Build a Closet Island
A closet island might take up space in the middle of your closet, but if you have the space to add one without it making it difficult to get around inside your closet, then do so. Closet islands have drawers installed in them. You can use these drawers for many different items. The flat top of the island can be used for folding clothes, making the laundry much more pleasurable to do.
9. Install a Shelving System
Rather than throwing your personal items down on the floor or trying to fit everything on the top closet rack, you can install a shelving system. Install vertical shelves from the floor to the ceiling in your closet. You can then use these shelves to place some of your most-used items on such as your favorite purse, favorite pair of shoes, and even your jewelry box! It helps keep these items from becoming lost in the clutter and saves you space as well.
